I have in the past been stumped by how to set permissions for files and folders on my webs. In oscommerce it is one of the most asked questions in the oscommerce install forums by newbies and there are a lot of other programs that require that you set permissions. Whether it be to allow access for people or bot or for downloads or to protect files from would be hackers. Yes there is always the .htaccess protection option but this does not set permissions it only requires that the user be logged in as the admin to access the file for editing. Many folders you do not want an .htaccess file in as you want it available for all or some. In Fact most files you do not want to restrict with this type of protection as it will make it impossible for a person to download your file or upload to a space you have provided. It will also prevent others from making changes if you are working on an open source project and want to allow this access. The most common use of permissions is to limit to what degree a person has access to certain files. Sometimes full access is required in order to allow a download but then sometimes you do not want an unauthorized person to be able to change any material yet still give them access to a file for download. Or you want to make it a read only so they can see it on the net but cannot access the write function. Whatever the case all files and folders need to have permissions set but with many hosts this is not a simple process cause they do not document the corresponding number with the permission you want to allow or dis-allow as the case may be. They have their standard internet file setting that is applied to all files you upload. Ever have a program like oscommerce or some other say you need to set permissions to 777, 766, 764, 666, 646, 640, 644, 600, 400 or many others? And you sit there and scratch your head cause you have no idea what they are talking about or how it is accomplished. Yea I was there too, once. Permissions are set through your control panel files and folders interface. On IXWebhosting.com and now on Webhostingpad.com I would log on to the site open the control panel opens then access all the domains, files and folders. I would navigate to the domain, folder, and file I want then click it to see the permissions panel Here I can edit, delete, view or whatever but most important is here is where I set permissions. Well this is a simple javascript that allows you to find that illusive number and see what permissions you have to set in order to get that number. A way to figure out the required permissions Just check the boxes that apply to get the corresponding permission number. You are the "owner" of the site. You definitely want read and write and execute capabilities. You may have "groups" set up and through email or some other means have given someone or a group of people the web address to this folder and here is where you set permissions for them as far as what they can do. Read, write and/or execute the file or folder. "Other" would be anyone and everyone. Anyone who can access your file. Unless the file is private for your eyes only or for only the group you have given access then this is most often set as read or not checked at all if a private file you do not want accessed by any. If you have material you want to make available for download you would give permissions here You may want a read only which is the way most web site permissions are but then again you may want a write permission if you are working on an open source file and want users to input there data directly instead of through you. I would not be to quick to give this access unless it is necessary. If the file is a download you will want to give full access so they can copy the file to their computer as in a download.
For now here is your free way to find permission numbers. Just check the boxes till you find the permission number you want and then remember what is checked and apply it to your folder or file on your web. Your host may have a different layout but the idea is usually the same. If this does not work for you contact your host for support.
This free script provided by I sincerely hope that this little program helps you find the correct settings to make your life easier. I had it on a web page in a folder on my desktop till I went to the oscommerce forums and found so many that just didn't have a clue of how to set folder Permissions on their webs. I figured that they were in the same boat I had been in a few years earlier and so brought this out of retirement to be of help. I hope it solves your problems. We have created a site called The Cerebral Palsy Family Support Network and it can be found here. http://www.cpfsn.org My daughter has Cerebral Palsy. I do not say this for sympathy. I have created a site devoted to helping people with disabilities find resources they need to navigate DSHS, DDD, SSI and others including the school system. What I need from you is to let people with disabilities know of the site and get them to send me information of their local and State agencies that fulfill the needs of the disabled. I want to make this information available to all for free on my site. I just need the help of either a person with a child having cerebral palsy or any disability or a concerned person who can donate their time to help seek out this information of advocacy groups for the disabled. I am spending what time and resources I have but I need help. Please check out the site and if you can contribute with any information please do so. Through having to take our daughter to therapy and doctors appointments we have come to know many parent's of children with Cerebral Palsy. In the course of our attempts to advocate for our daughter and upon hearing of the same troubles others have had doing the same we decided to use some web space and try to do something about it. We want very much to be able to provide relevant information for every locality across the country so that people seeking information do not have to spend days in search of the information they need. We would welcome any help you could give us. Any links you can supply for either .gov's or private agencies that provide for or advocate for the Disabled would be appreciated. We would like to break them down by Federal, State, County, City and Schools. Please visit www.cpfsn.org and see if there is anything you can contribute to grow the site into a useful and relevant site for people with disabilities specially those with Children who have Cerebral Palsy. If you have a web presence a link to the site would be appreciated.
