Shari ~ Ocean Shores WA. Growing a Garden in sea sandy soils and keeping the deer at bay. Hi Robert, I think it’s great that you let just anyone post their ideas on your site Well when we first moved to Ocean shores ther was a little patch of garden where the prior owner tried to grow raspberrys. He told us when we bought the place that the deer kepts eating all the new shoots and he hadn’t been able to get anything form theplants. He had spent quite a bit on some fencing and of course the plants them selves but he just couldn’t get them to produce. Well I found an answer to the deer problem right off. We took and covered the little garden area with some netting like they use for blueberrys and such on commercial farms. We got it at a nursery in Aberdeen. It wasn’t all that expensive for what little we needed but it kept the deer form jumping into the garden and eating the raspberry shoots. We ties some aluminum foil to it so the deer could see it was there. It made a difference but when things were able to grow they didn’t grow well. I fertilized with miracle grow and it seemed that it woul take a lot of applications. I gues the sand was not holding the fertilizer mush like your problem. Now we have lots of alder trees here and in the fall the ground is covered in leaves. Most just burn them or they have a recycle bin from the local garbage company they get rid of them in but our neighbor had a compost area and told us we needed to strt one too. So about 4 years ago we made a compost area and started piling leaves not only from our yard but from neighbor and wherever we could we would just ask if we could have their leaves from the recycle cans. It rains a lot here and so it didn’t take long for the leaves to rot and we dug it into the soil around the raspberrys and the following year they did much better. It is now the third year and they are doing great. The leaves are holding the rain and the fertilizer and I read that the leaves make the soil like acidic and raspberrys like that. So I just wanted to tell people that. We get real nice raspberrys now. Thanks Shari Ocean Shores, WA. (Personal information withheld by request.)Thank you for your terrific article. I think if you can find a place to get horse manure to put in your compost you will find the fruit will do as well as with the chemical fertilizer. The lifespan of the fertilizer will be longer and the berries will have a better taste and more nutrients. It will also help to hold moisture that easily seeps away in sandy soil. Next time you might want to use a spell checker Shari. I posted as is. If you would like me to run it through a spell check and repost it just let me know. Free office program with spell check can be downloaded here: Free download here: http://www.openoffice.org/index.html Thanks again for the wonderful article. The following is the same on all pages and if you have already read it, you need not bother reading it again.
My daughter has Cerebral Palsy. I do not say this for sympathy. I have created a site devoted to helping people with disabilities find resources they need to navigate DSHS, DDD, SSI and others including the school system. What I need from you is to let people with disabilities know of the site and get them to send me information of their local and State agencies that fulfill the needs of the disabled. I want to make this information available to all for free on my site. I just need the help of either a person with a child having cerebral palsy or any disability or a concerned person who can donate their time to help seek out this information of advocacy groups for the disabled. I am spending what time and resources I have but I need help. Please check out the site and if you can contribute with any information please do so. Check out the site I made for families with children who have CP Click http://www.cpfsn.org Through having to take our daughter to therapy and doctors appointments we have come to know many parent's of children with Cerebral Palsy. In the course of our attempts to advocate for our daughter and upon hearing of the same troubles others have had doing the same we decided to use some web space and try to do something about it. We want very much to be able to provide relevant information for every locality across the country so that people seeking information do not have to spend days in search of the information they need. We would welcome any help you could give us. Any links you can supply for either .gov's or private agencies that provide for or advocate for the Disabled would be appreciated. We would like to break them down by Federal, State, County, City and Schools. Please visit www.cpfsn.org and see if there is anything you can contribute to grow the site into a useful and relevant site for people with disabilities specially those with Children who have Cerebral Palsy.
